When you’re exhausted, but your mind won’t be still

Most people with anxiety aren’t sitting around worrying about nothing. You’re functioning, showing up, getting things done. You’re just doing all of it while carrying something heavy that nobody else can see. You’re thinking about the conversation you had this morning, the email you haven’t sent, the thing you said three weeks ago that probably didn’t mean anything, but what if it did?

Whether you’re an adult who has been quietly managing this for years, a teen who is holding it together at school but falling apart at home, or a parent watching your child worry in ways that break your heart, you know how heavy it gets. Anxiety has a way of pulling you just far enough out of your own life that nothing feels quite as good as it should.

In therapy for anxiety, we help you understand why anxiety feels the way it does and what to do when it shows up. We focus on practical tools you can use in your day-to-day life, like what to do when your thoughts start spiralling, how to calm your body when anxiety shows up physically, or how to step out of the loop of overthinking so it doesn’t take over your whole day. Over time, those small shifts add up. The thoughts don’t spiral as far, your body settles more quickly, and you begin to feel a little more confident, a little calmer, and a little more like yourself again.

Thoughts people with anxiety often carry:

In therapy for anxiety, we help you understand what anxiety is doing and teach you how to stop letting it lead.

What Therapy For Anxiety Can Do For You Or Your Child

Anxiety is exhausting. Full stop.

It’s more than a passing thought. Anyone who has lived with it knows how it builds quietly, stacking one worry on top of another until every scenario has been covered and your mind still isn’t satisfied. It doesn’t stay in your head either. It moves into your body, tight chest, racing heart, restless sleep, into your relationships, your sleep, the way you walk into a room, check your phone, or lie awake at night, running through everything you said today. It’s a particular kind of tiredness that’s hard to explain to someone who hasn’t felt it.

That’s exactly what we’re here to work on.

At Willow Tree Wellness & Psychotherapy, therapy for anxiety gives you a caring space to understand what’s driving your anxiety, build skills that help you feel more in control, and change the patterns that have been keeping you stuck. We go beyond talk therapy to work on the thoughts, the physical symptoms, and the behaviours that tend to pile on top of anxiety and make everything feel heavier. For parents, we also offer support for navigating your child’s anxiety at home and at school, without burning yourself out in the process.

Something changes when anxiety stops being in control. Gradually, the things that used to feel impossible start to feel manageable. The noise in your head gets a little quieter, and you start to relax enough to enjoy life again.

What Does Therapy For Anxiety Help With?

If your mind moves constantly from one worry to the next, and relaxing, concentrating, or sleeping feels harder than it should, you may be living with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). It’s one of the most common presentations we work with, and it responds well to the right combination of skills and support.
When your brain gets stuck in loops, replaying conversations, rehearsing worst-case scenarios, and analyzing everything that could go wrong, it’s genuinely exhausting. We help you understand why your mind works this way and build pra
Panic attacks are frightening on their own, but what makes them especially hard is what often comes next. The fear of having another one. The way that fear starts to shape what you do and where you go. We work through both layers together, addressing not just the panic itself but the anxiety that builds around it.

Social anxiety has a way of making your world smaller over time, so gradually you almost don’t notice it happening. You stop going to things. You avoid certain conversations. You replay interactions for hours after they’re done, looking for everything you said wrong. By the time most people come to us, the list of things they’ve been avoiding is longer than they realized. We help you understand what’s driving it and, slowly, at your own pace, start getting some of that ground back.

OCD is often misunderstood and rarely has much to do with being neat or organized. It shows up as intrusive thoughts, compulsions, and rituals that take up increasing amounts of time and energy, and it can be exhausting to live with. We work with the full range of OCD presentations using evidence-based approaches, including exposure therapy, in a space that is supportive and non-judgemental.

If you find yourself constantly checking symptoms, researching conditions, and seeking reassurance without ever actually feeling reassured, health anxiety may be keeping you stuck in a cycle that feels protective but actually keeps the fear alive. We help you understand what’s driving it and build a different, more grounded relationship with uncertainty.

Trauma has a way of staying present long after the event itself is over. PTSD and cPTSD can show up as hypervigilance, nightmares, emotional numbness, or a persistent sense of being on edge that doesn’t seem to have a clear cause. We work with trauma carefully and at a pace that always feels safe, following your lead every step of the way.

If you’ve ever spent more time worrying about doing something perfectly than actually doing it, you know how much energy perfectionism can burn through. It feeds anxiety quietly, in ways that aren’t always easy to connect. We help you slow down, understand what’s underneath the pressure, and find a way forward that doesn’t require you to be flawless just to feel okay about yourself.
When leaving home, navigating crowds, or being in unfamiliar environments starts to feel genuinely unsafe, it’s easy to find yourself avoiding more and more until your world has become very small. Agoraphobia can narrow your life over time. Therapy for anxiety in Pickering helps you understand what’s happening and gently rebuild the freedom to move through the world again.
Hair-pulling and skin picking are body-focused repetitive behaviours that are often connected to anxiety, stress, or emotional dysregulation. They’re more common than most people realize, and they tend to carry a significant amount of shame. We provide compassionate support for both, in a space where you don’t have to minimize or explain what you’re going through.
A lot of people with anxiety also carry a lot of shame about it. Feeling like they should be able to handle things better, like they’re too sensitive, like everyone else just manages somehow. Over time, that shame becomes part of how they see themselves. We help you look at where those beliefs came from, whether they’re actually true, and start building a sense of self-worth with a bit more room.

We also work with younger clients (as young as 3 years old) who are navigating anxiety at home, at school, and in their friendships, as well as with the parents and caregivers who are trying to support them through it.

The willow doesn't resist the storm. It moves with it, holds steady, and keeps growing.

Tools & Modalities We Use in Therapy for Anxiety

Every person’s anxiety looks different, and how we work will always reflect who you are and what you’re truly dealing with. We draw from a range of evidence-based approaches and use what fits best for you, your stage of life, and what you’re working through.
CBT helps you understand the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviour. We use it to identify the thinking patterns that feed anxiety, things like catastrophizing, all-or-nothing thinking, and the constant need for reassurance, and build more grounded, flexible ways of responding to the world. CBT also forms the foundation for exposure-based work when that’s part of what you need
For anxiety that’s rooted in avoidance, including OCD, panic attacks, social anxiety, health anxiety, and agoraphobia, exposure therapy helps you gradually face what you’ve been avoiding at a pace that feels manageable. It’s one of the most well-researched approaches available for anxiety, and it’s consistently effective. We move through it carefully and collaboratively, with your full input at every step.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is especially useful when anxiety has become something you’ve been fighting for a long time without much relief. Rather than trying to eliminate anxious thoughts and feelings, ACT teaches you to make room for them without letting them dictate what you do, so you can keep moving toward the life and values that matter to you, even when your mind is being loud.

Anxiety rarely travels alone. It often brings intense emotions that feel hard to manage or predict. We build Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) skills for identifying, tolerating, and responding to those emotions so you’re better equipped when things get hard at work, at home, or in your relationships.

Anxiety lives in the body just as much as it lives in the mind. The physical tension, the shallow breathing, the nervous system that never quite settles, these are real experiences that deserve real attention. Somatic approaches, grounding techniques, and nervous system regulation work give you tools for coming back to yourself physically, not just mentally.
For younger clients, we use play and creative approaches to help them understand and process their anxiety in ways that feel safe and appropriate for their age and stage.

Our Approach

How Our Therapy for Anxiety Works

1. Begin The Journey

We start by getting to know what anxiety looks like in your day-to-day life; how long you've been carrying it, and what you've already tried. This includes a collaborative assessment that may draw on tools like the GAD-7 to understand where things are right now and give us a clear starting point. Our first priority is making sure you, or your child, feel heard and understood.

2. Build Steady Ground

Together, we work on what's most pressing: Quieting the overthinking, managing the physical symptoms, reducing avoidance, understanding where it all comes from. The tools we build are specific, realistic, and designed for your real life, not a textbook version of it.

3. Grow, Adjust & Keep Moving Forward

As things shift, so does the work. Sessions gradually move toward maintaining what's been built, deepening independence, and making sure the progress sticks. We help you take what's working in the room and apply it where it counts at work, at school, in relationships, so that moving forward feels possible and good.

Questions About Therapy for Anxiety

Anxiety is often the more obvious symptom of deeper-seated issues, like the patterns, experiences, and nervous system responses to lived experiences. Over time, you build practical coping strategies, learn to change the thought patterns that keep you stuck, and develop a stronger sense of control in your daily life. Approaches like CBT and ACT have decades of research behind them, and they work.

This is one of the most common questions we hear, and it’s a good one. Stress is usually tied to a specific situation and eases once that situation resolves. Anxiety tends to be more persistent. The worry doesn’t go away when the stressor does, and it often finds a new target. If your symptoms feel constant, overwhelming, or are getting in the way of your daily life, it may be more than temporary stress. We explore this together through conversation and, when helpful, standardized tools like the GAD-7, the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), RCADS for children and teens, or DASS-21 (Depression Anxiety Stress Scales) to better understand what you’re experiencing and track how things shift over time.

Not necessarily, and never before you’re ready. Some people focus on present-day tools and strategies, and that’s completely valid. Others find it helpful to explore past experiences to understand where their patterns come from. We figure out together what feels most useful, and we always move at your pace.
It’s genuinely hard to come back and try again after things haven’t worked, and we want to acknowledge that. What makes therapy different from self-help or general wellness approaches is that it’s specific to you. Your history, your patterns, your nervous system. We aren’t going to hand you a breathing exercise and send you on your way. We work with you consistently to understand what’s truly driving your anxiety and build tools that are tailored to how you specifically experience it.

Weekly anxiety therapy sessions are typically recommended at the beginning. Consistency matters when you’re building new skills because it helps the work gain traction. As progress builds, sessions can become less frequent. We check in regularly to make sure things are feeling useful and that the pacing makes sense for your life.

Many people notice early shifts within the first few sessions. A sense of being understood, some initial relief, a small change in perspective. More consistent, noticeable progress often happens around the six to eight session mark, especially if you’re practicing strategies between appointments. Meaningful, lasting change tends to develop over roughly twelve to twenty sessions for many people, though everyone moves at a different pace. We check in regularly to make sure therapy is feeling helpful and on track.

The relationship matters enormously in therapy. You should feel comfortable, heard, and respected, while also feeling gently challenged to grow. It’s okay if it takes a session or two to get a real sense of the fit. To help with this, all of our therapists have short introductory videos on our website so you can get a feel for their personality and approach before booking. We also offer a free 20-minute consultation where you can ask questions and get a sense of whether working together feels right before committing to anything.

Yes. We offer virtual therapy to individuals across Ontario, so you can access support from wherever you are, whether that’s Pickering or anywhere else in the province. Many of our clients find online sessions just as valuable as coming in person, and a lot easier to fit into an already full schedule.

We work with children as young as three, right through to adults, as well as parents who are navigating their child’s anxiety alongside their own. If you’re unsure whether we’re the right fit for your child’s age or stage, a free 20-minute consultation is a great place to start.
