When fitting in takes everything out of you

People with autism work incredibly hard just to get through an ordinary day. Maybe it’s a young child who melts down the moment they walk through the door. Maybe it’s a teen who seems shut down and disconnected by the time dinner rolls around. Or maybe an adult who’s learned to cope but never quite feels like they’re not working twice as hard as everyone else. It can be difficult to know how to help when it’s not always clear what’s needed in the moment.

When you’ve spent enormous energy masking at school or in social situations, by the time the day is done, there’s simply nothing left. That exhaustion is real, and it deserves to be taken seriously. Over time, that kind of constant effort can lead to burnout, shutdown, or a sense of losing touch with who you are underneath it all.

At Willow Tree Wellness & Psychotherapy, autism therapy starts with understanding. We take the time to learn how your brain, or your child's brain, works. Then we work together to understand what’s underneath those moments and build supports that make them easier to move through. This might look like understanding sensory overwhelm and adjusting the environment, finding ways to communicate needs more clearly, or supporting transitions so they feel less abrupt and more manageable.

What Autism Therapy Can Do For Your Family

Autism doesn’t come with an instruction manual.

Living with autism shapes how a person moves through the world: How sensory input is processed, how communication happens, how transitions are experienced, and how relationships are navigated. It is not a problem to be fixed, but a person to be understood and valued.

That’s where we come in.

At Willow Tree Wellness & Psychotherapy, autism therapy offers a warm, consistent space to be understood, build skills, and grow at a pace that fits. For children, that might mean learning to regulate emotions, cope with transitions, and feel more confident in the everyday moments that don’t always come easily. For adults, it might mean finally having language for experiences that have never quite been named, building tools that work with the way your brain operates, and finding more ease in the relationships and environments that matter most. We also offer parent coaching to help families understand their child’s needs and carry the strategies home.

ver time, the hard days become more manageable. There’s more predictability, less overwhelm, and a clearer understanding of what you need and how to support it. You begin to feel more confident in yourself, or more connected to who your child is, without the constant pressure to keep up in ways that feel exhausting or out of sync.

What Does Autism Therapy Help With?

Big feelings can come out of nowhere, and when they do, they can be really hard to manage. We help you or your child understand what’s happening inside when things feel like too much, and build practical skills to use in those moments.
When an adult or child spends their days working hard to appear “typical,” the toll adds up quietly. We help people understand what masking is, why it’s exhausting, and how to build a life where they don’t have to hide who they are.
Whether it’s a new school year, a change at home, or an unexpected disruption, transitions can be genuinely destabilizing. We build tools to help you or your child move through change with more predictability and less distress.

Anxiety and autism often go hand in hand. Using CBT adapted for autistic children, teens, and adults, alongside other approaches, we help you manage worry and feel steadier in the situations that feel hardest.

Social situations can feel confusing, unpredictable, or draining. We help build communication skills and social confidence at a pace that feels safe and right for you or your child.

Growing up feeling different can leave a mark. We help children, teens, and adults with autism build a sense of self rooted in their own strengths rather than measured against everyone else.

We work with children and families to better understand sensory needs and create strategies that reduce sensory-related stress at home, at school, and out in the world.

The mental load that parents carry is real, and it deserves support, too. We offer parent coaching to help you better understand your child’s needs, build practical strategies for home and school, and feel more confident in how you show up for them every day.
From IEPs to social dynamics to just getting through the day, school can be one of the most demanding environments for autistic children. We work with parents, and when appropriate, with schools, to support your child across the places where they spend their time.

Like a willow, the strongest roots aren't rigid. They bend, they hold, and they grow.

Tools & Modalities We Use in Autism Therapy

Every person is different, and the way we work will always reflect who you are and what you truly need. We draw from a range of approaches and use the ones that are the best fit for you, your child, and your family.

CBT helps you understand the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviour. We adapt it to suit the way autistic brains process information, making it concrete, visual, and genuinely useful in real-life situations.
We build practical Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) Informed skills for identifying, tolerating, and responding to big emotions, the kind that come up at school, work, at home, and everywhere in between.
A lot of stress and overwhelm live in the body. Grounding techniques, breathwork, and nervous system regulation strategies help you or your child recognize what they’re feeling physically and find their way back to calm.
For younger children, play is the most natural language there is. Play therapy creates a warm, engaging space to build skills, work through big experiences, and feel safe enough to just be a kid.

We help children, teens, and adults explore their own story, one that’s built around who they are and what makes them unique, not around what’s hard or what makes them different from everyone else.

You know your child better than anyone. We bring the clinical tools, you bring the context, and together we figure out what works for your family. Parent coaching is built into the process so that what your child learns in therapy has somewhere to land when they get home.

Understanding how the brain works and why it responds the way it does can be genuinely relieving for adults, children and their parents. We help you make sense of your own experience, and help you make sense of it alongside them.
When it’s helpful, we connect with schools and other providers to make sure your child is supported across all the environments where they spend their time.
We use tools like the Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS-2) to better understand how your child or teen navigates social communication and track progress over time. While it isn’t a diagnostic tool, it can help shape a stronger support plan and may be used to support school-based accommodations like an IEP while your family pursues a formal diagnosis.

Our Approach

How Our Autism Therapy Works

1. Begin The Journey

We start by getting to know your or your child’s strengths, their challenges, and the way things are showing up in daily life right now. Our first priority is making sure you, your child, and your family feel genuinely seen and not alone in this.

2. Build Steady Ground

Together, we work on the areas that matter most, like emotional regulation, coping with change, navigating friendships, and getting through the school day. We build tools that are practical, specific, and made to work for this unique brain.

3. Grow, Adjust & Keep Moving Forward

Therapy isn't a straight line. As you or your child hit new milestones and face new challenges, we adjust the work accordingly. We keep parents closely involved so that what's built in sessions has room to grow at home too.

Questions About Autism Therapy

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a neurodevelopmental difference that shapes how a person experiences the world: How they communicate, connect with others, process sensory input, and navigate routines. No two autistic people are the same, and that’s not a caveat; it’s the whole point.

At Willow Tree, we take a neurodiversity-affirming approach. That means we’re not here to change who your child is; we’re here to understand them, support their growth, and make sure the way they move through the world is met with respect rather than a checklist.

Autism therapy focuses on the practical areas that make daily life feel more manageable. We work to build emotional regulation skills, find better ways to communicate, help you learn to cope with transitions, or help you feel more confident at school and with friends. We also work closely with parents throughout the process, because you know your child best, and the support works better when everyone is on the same team.
Many families use OAP funding to access psychotherapy, and as Registered Social Workers, our services are typically eligible for reimbursement. We’ve supported many families through this process and are happy to provide the invoices and documentation you need. We always recommend checking the specifics with your OAP coordinator, and we’ll do whatever we can to make it as straightforward as possible on our end.
We don’t provide formal diagnostic assessments, but we do offer supportive screening tools, such as the Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS-2), to help us better understand your child’s social communication patterns and to guide the work we do together. While the SRS-2 isn’t a diagnostic tool, it can provide really useful insight and may help support school-based accommodations, like IEPs, while your family pursues a formal assessment. If you’re not sure where to start with that process, we’re happy to help point you in the right direction.

Honestly, the fit matters a lot, and we take that seriously. We work hard to make sure your child feels comfortable, understood, and not like they have to be anyone other than themselves from the very first session. If you’re not sure whether we’re the right match, we offer a free 20-minute consultation where you can ask questions, share what’s been going on, and get a sense of who we are before you commit to anything.

Yes!. We offer virtual therapy to families across Ontario, so you can access support from wherever you are, whether that’s Pickering or anywhere else in the province. A lot of our families find online sessions just as meaningful as in-person sessions and much easier to fit into an already busy week.

We work with young children all the way through to adults, as well as parents who are looking for coaching and a little extra support themselves. If you’re not sure whether we’re the right fit for your child’s age or stage, book a free consultation, and we can point you in the right direction.

You’ve already found us! Willow Tree Wellness & Psychotherapy is located in Pickering and offers both in-person and virtual therapy across Ontario. The easiest next step is booking a free 20-minute consultation so you can get a feel for who we are and ask any questions you have.

Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) therapy focuses on changing specific behaviours through reinforcement. What we do is a little different. Our approach is neurodiversity-affirming, which means we’re not trying to change who your child is. We focus on emotional well-being, self-understanding, and building skills that make daily life feel better for them.
That’s completely okay. You don’t need a formal diagnosis to start therapy with us. If your child is struggling and you’re still working through the assessment process, we can support them in the meantime and help you figure out the next steps if a formal diagnosis is something you’re pursuing.
