Currently I am a Master of Social Work student at the University of Toronto, where I am building a strong foundation in social work theories, ethics, and anti-oppressive practice. Through my front-line experience in social services, crisis support, and working directly with youth, I am confident in my ability to excel in this practicum role and continue my learning and development.
I hold an Honours Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Queen’s University. My coursework, including courses such as Social Determinants of Health, Clinical Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Elements of Social Work Practice and Individuals and Families, have provided me with a strong foundation for supporting children and adolescent social and emotional wellbeing. My research experience and frontline work have taught me the importance of confidentiality and upholding ethical standards when working with vulnerable populations.
During my current experience as a practicum student at the Durham District School Board, I work directly with students experiencing anxiety, emotional dysregulation, social challenges and school avoidance. This role has allowed me to support the overall well-being of children and youth and has strengthened my ability to regulate and co-regulate with them. My experience as an Ontario Works Caseworker with Durham Region Social Services has equipped me with the tools to support individuals facing intersecting barriers, including housing insecurity, job insecurity, mental health challenges, and financial instability. I have proven excellence in interpreting and implementing the Ontario Works legislation and Durham Region policies in order to provide financial and employment supports to assist my clients in reaching self-sufficiency. I excel in building individualized action plans, assisting clients in developing healthy coping skills and navigating resources to meet clients’ unique needs. Additionally, my volunteer work at the Sexual Assault Crisis Line has strengthened my ability to provide confidential, non-judgmental support, creating a safe space where survivors feel heard and validated. These experiences have deepened my commitment to client-centered service grounded in an anti-racist, anti-oppressive and anti-indigenous framework.
As a Peer Support Counsellor at Queen’s University, I provided students with a safe and confidential environment, free from judgment, where they could receive validation, reassurance, and support. Further, working within the Durham Catholic District School Board as a Tutor in the Classroom allowed me to strengthen my ability to build trusting relationships with students and families, and foster inclusive learning environments.
On a personal note, as someone who grew up in the Durham Region, I have a strong connection to this community and a clear understanding of its diverse needs. This practicum opportunity aligns with my personal passion for working with children and adolescents and it would be a fulfilling experience to be able to work with and provide service for the community I have grown up in.
